1st Place Winner-Other Rooms 2010 NKBA Ottawa Design Awards

It is often difficult to know what to do with ‘bonus rooms’. When this large room was added to the home several years ago it provided a functional space for a young family, now that the children have grown and left home this large bonus room needed definition. Often the space was used as a quiet escape from the activities of the home to keep connected to the office and soon became clear that creating a home office/study, complete with storage and display capabilities for personal collectables, was the best use of the space.

Having great natural light sources allowed more flexibility to create a rich backdrop of functional cabinetry. Selecting the warmth of natural cherry offers timeless elegance, including hand finished detail and a traditional style maintains similar styling to the rest of the home. Office and desk areas are all about function, keeping this in mind the choice to include a matching cherry wood countertop not only provides greater function than a hard surface it offers a natural warmth and consistency the room. It was important to the client to keep the lines soft, by adding profiled radius corners to the countertop allowed for an elegant flow of the space. Functional file drawers and a place for printing equipment adds to the overall usability as a true office. Glass doors and shelves create an eye catching display case for collectable items. Additional interior cabinet lighting was added to feature items to be displayed. The use of warm LED light was chosen for the long lasting, environmentally friendly nature of this light source.
