The primary focus for this custom home was simplicity, and the kitchen was no exception. Integrating a European feel into this country, waterfront home required a strategic blend of materials and style. Utilizing the space in this moderate size kitchen demanded careful planning ensuring we addressed the homeowners need for plenty of storage and space to entertain friends and family.

Integrating the kitchen into this open concept home while keeping the stunning waterfront view uninhibited was a tall challenge. Working closely with the homeowner, we wanted to create a visual separation between the kitchen space and main living areas without obstructing light or the view. By dropping the ceiling over the kitchen area, to just above nine feet, and framing the curved soffit creates a soft visual separation.

The rich cappuccino stain on maple was selected for the kitchen cabinets to blend with furnishings in adjacent spaces. Simple stainless steel hardware blends the modern stainless steel appliances surrounded by the dark wood cabinetry.  Wall oven, microwave and warming drawer are built-in to a single cabinet for ease of access. Each appliance centre has been balanced between cabinet storage centres complete with pull-out trays. The island blends style and function with pull-out waste/recycling centre beside the double sink as well as shallow cabinets on the seating side for the occasional dishes.

Natural terrazzo marble, with an eye-pleasing mosaic pattern, creates a blend of earthy materials and contemporary style. A complete hydronic heating system warms the floors on those cold winter days. Using natural materials in modern configuration creates the perfect blend of styles.

Although open concept homes can often pose a challenge to blend style and function this home embraces the contemporary style while remaining true to the surrounding environment.
