2011 2nd PLACE WINNER for SMALL KITCHENS – NKBA Ottawa Chapter Vision Awards
The perfect blend of style and function meet in this city garden home. With no option to expand the existing space we used every inch to maximize functionality. Keeping a symmetrical appearance along the range wall allows the space to feel uncluttered and efficient. Clean lines of shaker style cabinetry and modern appliances blend performance with aesthetics. Utilizing the space under a raised window to accommodate a built in microwave with additional storage focuses on accessibility to the pantry unit and refrigerator. Maintaining ease of use in small spaces can be a challenge when clearances aren’t always ideal, but by reducing the depth of the microwave cabinets it keeps an ample clear path in front of the pantry.
Creating unique storage solutions was the key for success in this kitchen renovation, like the one found in the recycling and refuse centre. The full height door is attached to a drawer box holding three bins for recycling and waste while the hidden pull-out shelf accommodates compost and supplies. Keeping cleaning items tidy, organized, and nearby is a snap using the u-shaped drawers under the sink area.
At the entrance to the kitchen the focus is on the antique glass inserts custom fitted into the cabinet doors. Each door is the frame for the beautiful colours in the glass art while creating functional decorative storage. The small space between the cabinet and window seemed the perfect location to include a window seat. As a bonus to the space we chose to be conscious of the potential storage and included three deep drawers perfect for storing seasonal dishes and serving ware.
The colour palette of neutral warm greys allows this cozy space to feel bright and open. The flow of light from the adjacent dining room through the pass-thru keeps you connected to the rest of the home and your dinner guests. Bon Appetite!
